US of A Road Trip: Day 3

After a rough sleep, we wake up and begin our day.

Today is shopping and exploring Portland day.We grab the car and head to Nob Hill which is apparently the premiere chic and hip shopping district in Portland. Now, this particular morning I didn’t see coming. I figured it would just be a typical day in Portland. You know, the fog over the city, the sounds of street-cars, the feel of being in a completely different place. What I didn’t see coming was the drastic hair cut I was (quasi) forced into by my dear mom.

$100 USD later, I had a significantly shorter do’ and was in a state of shock. What the hell did I do that for?! We continue shopping in this fantastically hip district and find a pizza place for lunch. Escape from NY Pizza was everything I thought a small pizza place would be and more. The talk in the shop was politics: “only 13 days guys!”, signs all over the place endorsing Barack Obama. It was great.

After our delicious pizza, we head back to the car so Mom can show me where she grew up. One of the reasons we decided on Portland was so mom could show me where she grew up. So, with the map and camera in hand, we head up into the residential neighbourhood and into up to where mom grew up.

It was gorgeous. The whole neighbourhood was. Mom showed me where she used to hang out, pointed at the different windows showing me which windows matched to which rooms, the fire hydrant where Uncle Jeff broke rode into in a wagon, the stairs where mom fell down and the church where they used to go on Sundays.

After we toured Nob Hill, it was off to another shopping district in Portland: The Pearl District. All the stores were funky and unique and not at all close together. The whole district is in warehouses divided by a confusing number of one-way streets. Trust me - I don't get lost easy but holy man was I ever lost.

After our feet started telling us how tired we were, it was time to header back to the hotel to sit down and have a little break from our shoes. Not a long break, as it was feedin' time and we were off to Jake's Grill for dinner. MmmmMMmmmmmm...

Thank God it was close... my feet were done with the day. Thank God for CNN...
